I was 14 when I got my first job. I worked aboard my grandfather’s shrimp boat.
The days were long and the work was hard. I quickly realized that, while I loved eating shrimp, I hated catching them.
The money was good, though, so I worked for him that summer and the next.
And that set a pattern I would follow for several years: working jobs I didn’t prticularly like (or downright hated) just to make money.
That’s the trap.
Most of us fall into the trap. We choose our work based on our need for money.
If we’re unskilled, we take whatever work we can get. If we go to college, we choose a major based on how much the job will pay when we graduate.
Sometimes we choose a profession because it’s what our parents want for us.
When we choose our work for the wrong reasons, we can wind up struggling for decades in a job that doesn’t fit, that leaves us bored and unhappy, and leads many of us to stress related illness.
But there is a better way.
I’m Adam Nettles, speaker, author and Livelihood Coach. I was in the trap for years. Then I found the way out.
The key to happiness in your career is to make your living doing what you Love. When you do this, you’ve found your Right Livelihood.
Right Livelihood is where your Natural Talents, what you Love to do, and what people will Pay you to do, come together.
A recent study by Warwick University concluded that happiness in your job or career goes hand in hand with greater success.
So to be happy and successful, determine your natural talents, decide which talent you Love doing the most, and turn that talent into a career that feeds your heart, your mind and your wallet.
Before I found my Right Livelihood, going to work was an ordeal. I began stressing out every Sunday afternoon and my stomach would instantly tighten up every time my boss said he wanted to talk to me.
Even when I had a job making good money, it never made up for the stress of doing work I didn’t like or working in a place I didn’t like.
For the sake of my sanity and my health, not to mention my lifestyle, I had to make a change.
Fast forward to today and my life is completely different. I’m calm and relaxed, my health has returned, my lifestyle is better than it’s ever been, and I can’t wait to get to work each day.
It took years to piece together my Right Livelihood and now I’m on a mission to help others do the same.
People say life is too short, but I say life is too long to work a job or career you hate. So I created the tools on this web page to help people fast track the move to their Right Livelihood.
